The 6 inch (150 x 150mm) wall tiles can be made in varying thickness using the same moulds – anywhere between 8-12mm. Coloured tiles can be produced using locally available pigments. Pigmented tiles can be made plain or patterned with polished or lacquered tiles giving a top quality floor covering.
The quantity of pigment required could be kept very small, as it is easy to make tiles that are only pigmented on the surface using the standard moulds. These tiles are made by coating the mould with a pigment/cement mix.
8mm thick tiles are used on walls to improve the interior of a building. As they are made from vibrated concrete, the tiles have a smooth, easy-to-clean surface – a great improvement over plaster and paint. The 12mm thick 6 inch tiles can also be used as a floor covering and if laid over a normal concrete slab, they give a smart, wear resistant floor surface.
The 9 inch (225 x 225mm) 16mm thick floor tiles are laid over a normal concrete floor slab to give a smart, wear resistant surface. 32mm thick tiles can be used over a slightly stabilised bed of sand or laterite. A simple bed of sand or earth can be used for economy in rooms other than bathrooms and kitchens. |
