UK COALITION GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME SUPPORTS PARRY APPROACH TO INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Worldwide success of Parry Associates’ building materials shows way forward for livelihood creation and economic development in poorer nations
The programme for government issued on 20th May by the UK’s Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government points to the value of the work of innovative companies such as JPM Parry & Associates Ltd of the West Midlands.
The programme sets out ‘to deliver value for money for British taxpayers and to maximize the inpact of our aid budget’.
It also states the aim of ensuring that ‘UK Trade & Investment and the Export Credits Guarantee Department become champions for British companies that develop and export innovative green technologies around the world’ and to ‘provide a more integrated approach to post-conflict reconstruction’.
Parry Associates is a leading innovator in these fields. Its approach is to enable practical interventions to be made on the ground through the provision of appropriate technology. Its major success has been in the supply of machinery for the production of roofing tiles, which create new local industries supplying high-quality products for local needs.
A previous project involving Parry Associates and supported by the UK Department for International Development saw the entire Malawi school building programme supplied with Parry roof tiles manufactured at a network of workshops across Malawi. In Kenya, the entire new town of Kaputiei south of Nairobi is being built with construction elements produced on Parry machines.
The company supplies its products to small entrepreneurs as well as non-governmental organizations of all sizes and governments agencies. Tens of thousands of people have gained livelihoods through the application of Parry building materials technology and over a million people benefit from the durability and coolness of Parry roofs alone.
Parry Associates has also developed techniques for the manufacture of bricks and blocks, water tanks, lightweight floors for buildings with two or more storeys and both internal and external paving products. The company provides training at its UK premises or on site throughout the world. Parry products are designed for maximum efficiency in manufacture, transport and installation – minimizing environmental effects through reduction in the amount of material and fuel required for production and distribution.
‘Our approach to development is to create livelihoods anywhere in the world where people not only do valuable work but make products that improve their local communities. This is high-value development – for the relatively small cost of the machinery and training entire industries are being created, people are lifted out of poverty and the impact on the environment is minimised,’ said the company’s chairman John Parry.

Notes:
JPM Parry & Associates Ltd was founded in 1974 by John Parry, one of the early team of directors of the Intermediate Technology Development Group and chair of its Building Materials Panel, to offer technical services to the construction industry in Britain and overseas. Shortly afterwards, the company started to develop a range of intermediate technology machinery that could be used to produce quality building materials in developing countries using local resources. These are now in service in over 80 countries.
Applied to transport, the Parry approach to technological development produced the flywheel energy storage system licensed to Parry People Movers Ltd (www.parrypeoplemovers.com).
