PARRY ASSOCIATES SUCCESS STORIES CONTINUE TO HELP WAR-TORN AND UNDER PRIVILEGED COMMUNITIES ON A GLOBAL SCALE
Word has spread far and wide about the durability and popularity of JPM Parry Associates Ltd’s roofing and building materials products – from Africa and Asia to Latin America and the South Pacific.
They have dispatched their first HIGH AND DRY affordable two storey construction kit to an aspiring entrepreneur who is keen to use this innovative design in his home country of Somalia, East Africa. This order was shipped on 7th December 2005.
The increasingly peaceful situation in Sudan enabled Parry Associates to supply four combination plants last year, comprising moulds to manufacture Super Roman roof tiles, floor tiles and paving bricks. These were donated to worthy causes by a British charitable foundation. A fifth plant is ready for shipment, ordered by an associate, Mr Aniek Tong Atak, a member of the Dinka tribe in South Sudan who is currently working in London as a maths teacher. He hopes to fly out soon and see his plant commissioned.
Approaches have been received from Uganda, one of which resulted in an order for 120 riven slab moulds and a steel kerb mould that was made to order at Parry Associates Cradley Heath workshops. Their intention is to order further moulds as and when needed. Another potential market satisfied.
A further recent enquiry which has been advised as an order was for a semi sheet roofing plant requiring 250 moulds and three different roof finishing tiles for Trinidad & Tobago. This customer has also enquired about a special verge tile which Parry Associates have designed and produced successfully as a prototype.
Three orders of Super Roman roofing materials are making an impact in the Vanuatu group of islands in the South Pacific. A technician was sent there by the newly established Build IT organisation to commission the first plant and train local workers and NGO staff how to correctly make the tiles using locally sourced materials. The first completed roof was blessed just before Christmas and more enquiries are expected from the NGO involved both in the Vanuatu area and elsewhere.
Paul Barker, Sales Administrator at JPM Parry & Associates, says that “Being in contact with individuals and companies with such varied backgrounds and circumstances is very rewarding, especially being able to provide a service for people in the third world”. He also regards meeting some of these same people as a privilege when they are able to visit Parry's Intermediate Technology Workshops in Cradley Heath.
Parry roofing is a popular and commercially viable alternative to corrugated iron, a hot, noisy and not very durable material which up to now has been the only alternative for low cost builders. The HIGH AND DRY two storey construction kit will be very beneficial in Tsunami and Earthquake affected areas such as South East Asia and Pakistan, and anywhere where land shortage encourages construction higher than a single storey.

1. JPM Parry & Associates Ltd was founded in 1974 by John Parry, one of the early team of directors of the Intermediate Technology Development Group and chair of its Building Materials Panel, to offer technical services to the construction industry in Britain and overseas. Shortly afterwards, the company started to develop a range of intermediate technology machinery that could be used to produce quality building materials in developing countries using local resources. These are now in service in over 80 countries.
2. Applied to transport, the Parry approach to technological development produced the flywheel energy storage system licensed to Parry People Movers Ltd ( www.parrypeoplemovers.com).
