ENVIRONMENTAL & ENERGY R&D

Foreword

By John Parry, MBE, Managing Director

JPM Parry & Associates Ltd has a reputation for getting things done. It was for this reason that we find ourselves being forwarded queries and requests for new ideas, new solutions, and the practical facilities to test and produce prototypes as part of doing research and development. Here consultancy, design, research and testing go hand in hand, so there is little need to split up these different tasks between a number of companies who then have to attempt an efficient co-operative approach.

Overview

One of the core factors determining the success of any new technology is likely to be the energy regime. Many processes are highly sensitive to the cost of energy, and therefore to energy efficiency, while in many countries even the availability of conventional sources of energy cannot be guaranteed, resulting in the need for independent or alternative supplies. Equally important is the fact that adverse impact on the environment is usually proportional to the amount of fossil fuel consumed.

Our expertise

Parry Associates' assignments over 25 years, while not often specifically concerned with energy, have led to the accumulation of particular expertise in the harvesting, conservation and storage of energy, generally making use of simple and reliable techniques. Examples include:

Solar energy harvesting

At the request of a specialist solar energy development company Parry Associates helped in the prototype work on a new system of solar energy conversion using concave mirrors.

Natural-energy powered roofing equipment

At the request of users in the most remote areas or subject to serious power interruptions, Parry Associates developed solar and hand powered versions of our roof tile and semi-sheet machines.

Flywheel powered transport

The use of flywheel energy storage for light rail transport developed by Parry Associates has provided unique experience in the manufacture and application of flywheels storing up to 2kWh of energy for transport application.

Kinetic energy-assisted manual machines

Similar to the operation of a flywheel, the twin heavy pendulums of the Parry hand powered crusher make the work easier than ordinary manual methods.

Agro industrial waste as an energy source

Parry Associates has developed a practical means of disposing of dairy product waste such as lactose, combined with other waste solids by converting these into clean-burning fuels.
